This was the year for a Big Ten championship, a number one seed in the Tournament, a trip to the Final Four, and who knows what else? Unfortunately, disastrous losses to Iowa and Penn State exposed the Spartans Purdue and Indiana sealed the deal. No Big Ten championship and big questions leading into March. Can Izzo and company right the ship? History says YES! Here's why:Depth: State goes 10 deep, which is crucial at tourney time.Experience: Look out if Neitzel, Naymick, Suton, and Morgan perform as advertised. Youth: Lucas, Summers and Allen are maturing.
Lucas will have a big tourney. Coach: Izzo and the month of March…a nice match, isn't it? The Big Ten is lost, but March Madness is around the corner The Spartans will be back in a big way. . (Adds details, background and byline) Bonds By Susan Cornwell WASHINGTON, April 29 (Reuters) – Rep Barney Frank, asenior Democrat in the U.S House of Representatives, said onWednesday he supports U.S. congressional authorization ofplanned International Monetary Fund gold sales, but only if $4billion of the proceeds go to loans for poor countries. “I am for gold sales only if it allows $4 billion for poorcountries,” Frank, chairman of the House Financial ServicesCommittee, told Reuters outside the House chamber. “I will notsupport it if it doesn’t say that.” He said the U.S Treasury Department also supported thiscondition. The IMF plans to sell about 403 tonnes of its goldreserves to finance administrative expenses, as well as givefinancial aid to poor countries. Congressional authorization is needed for the U.S.representative at the IMF board to vote on the gold sales. It is unclear whether the IMF will sell the 403 tonnes ofgold on the market or to central banks, but the IMF has madeclear that any sale will be done in a way that does notdisrupt gold markets.
Frank said he also supported a proposed $100 billion inadditional funding for the IMF to help it bail out countriesin the global financial crisis. President Barack Obama wrote recently to Congress, urgingit to approve the $100 billion loan to the IMF, which hepledged to the IMF at a Group of 20 nations meeting. Asked when Congress might act on the IMF proposals, Franksaid this was up to congressional appropriators. The United States has effective veto power over major IMFdecisions because it has around 17 percent of the globalinstitution’s voting shares, and the decisions require an 85percent majority. The IMF holds 103.4 million ounces (3,217 tonnes) of gold, making it the third-largest official holder of gold.
The goldis valued on its balance sheets at about $9.2 billion, but thegold’s market value was $94.8 billion as of March 31, 2009, atthen-current market prices. The sale of a planned 403 tonnes of gold (12.97 millionounces) carried a market value of $11.9 billion as of March31, 2009. (Reporting by Susan Cornwell; Editing by Jan Paschal) Bonds.
